Prof. Jefferson Cardia Simões holds a PhD in Glaciology (Cambridge, 1990) and is Director of the Polar and Climatic Centre at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and of the World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries. He served as Vice-President of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) / ISC from 2016 to 2024.
